How to update your bathroom in one weekend

Newly built bathroom | buildtoday
These easy and cheap renovations will refresh your bathroom. Even better, you can complete them in less than two days!

There are certain areas of the home that tend to grab the attention of prospective buyers more than others. Bathrooms are definitely on that list. A bright and beautiful bathroom is a major draw, and it can help boost the overall value of your home.

Giving your bathroom an update may seem like a costly project, both in time and money, but it doesn’t have to be that way. These simple changes can breathe new life into your bathroom. Even better, you can complete them for minimal cost in less than two days!

Install new hardware

You’d be surprised at how much old drawer pulls can date your bathroom. Give this space an instant face lift by investing in new hardware for your drawers and cabinets. Take it a step further and update your taps as well.

You can’t go wrong with a classic look here, but introducing more trendy elements can be a great way to make your bathroom look modern without overwhelming the space. If you’d like to save a bit of money, look for used hardware and tapware.

Touch up the caulk and grout

Another simple change that can have a major impact is freshening up the caulk and grout. With a little elbow grease, you can scrub up your grout and add new, straight lines of caulk along the tub and sink. This cheap and quick fix will have your bathroom looking fresh and clean in an hour or two.

Refinish the tub

If your tub has seen better days, a total replacement can be pricey. Before you splash out on a new stand alone, consider refinishing your tub instead. Cosmetic issues such as discolouration or surface scratches, cracks or nicks can easily be fixed with a refinish.

Add some paint

Is there anything that a fresh coat of paint can’t fix? We don’t think so! This versatile reno trick can be used to bring in a trendy pop of colour with a feature wall, brighten up a small space with fresh, white walls, or update old cabinetry with a wash or stain. Your options are endless, cheap and can easily be accomplished in a day.

Get a ‘new’ mirror

The mirror is a major focal point for any bathroom, but it can be expensive to replace. Luckily there are more cost effective options. Think about adding a molding around the edges or a decorative, elegant frame. This can help hide any wear and tear around the edges and bring a little more style into your bathroom.

Update your vanity

A great way to brighten up the space is to focus all of your attention on the vanity. You have a few different options here that, when combined, will create a new look and feel for the entire room.

Consider changing up the taps or repainting your vanity (see above). You can also replace the bench top. Splurging on a stone top is a great way to add value and create a striking visual change that will pay off big time. If your budget allows for it, stone benches are versatile, timeless and durable.

Bring in some storage

When considering any home renovations, it’s important to remember that you can never go wrong with adding more storage. Buyers love it! The bathroom is no exception. Invest in clever storage options to uplift the space for less. Think along the lines of open shelving, over-the-toilet or over-the-door storage, medicine cabinets behind the mirror, etc.

Install a new toilet

Another integral feature, the right toilet can make or break any bathroom. Replacing an old toilet is a great way to update the space, and it’s easier than you might think. The hardest part is physically lifting it into place. DIY this one to save a bit of scratch.

Invest in new lighting

The right lighting has the power to make a room look bigger, add ambiance or boost functionality. It’s incredible what you can achieve with one little bulb. Brighten or soften your lighting by replacing your lightbulbs. You can also look at updating your fixtures, tying together the overall style of your bathroom.

Replace the sink

You’d be surprised at how much sinks have changed over the last couple of decades. Gone are the days of your stock-standard, under-bench bowl. Sinks come in a huge variety of sizes, shapes and materials. You can even get them installed above the bench. With all the options available, it’s easy to transform your sink into a statement.

Go green

Sustainability is a big consideration for prospective buyers as everyone looks to do their part in living a more eco-friendly life. Adding sustainable features to your home is a great way to attract buyers, and the bathroom has plenty of opportunity to jump on. Think about incorporating sustainable building materials as well as water saving tapware, shower heads and toilets.
